ABOUT WALKMONOLOGY Walkmonology: the use of the portable audio player as a tool to put the audient inside a theatrical environment. In celebration of social progress over the last 20 years we have changed the spelling of Walkmanology to Walkmonology to make it gender-neutral. It’s been more than 20 years since the first Walkman arrived in California and was immediately commandeered by the skateboarding set; except for a few that were nabbed and put to use as theatrical tools by Antenna. It was a scary time; many parents worried that their children might never hear an ambient noise ever again, particularly noises uttered by disapproving parents. In 1982 Antenna produced the first Walkman-driven theatrical adventure using Tam High - that is, the entire campus of Tamalpais High School - as the set, and included these very same headphone-hampered young souls as the actors and narrators relaying their own experiences - a day in the life of a high school. The first ever Walkman show - HIGHSCHOOL. Now, more than 20 years later, HIGHSCHOOL is back as part of the 20th anniversary of Walkmonology. It’s been 20-plus years of Walkmans and other techno-toys (MP3, Infrared, etc.) and Antenna is still putting you in the center of the scene.
